The Argentine Republic and the Sovereign Order of Malta established diplomatic relations in 1948. A Postal Agreement was signed in 1979.

In 1960, the Sovereign Order of Malta received the official visit of the President of the Argentine Republic, Arturo Ercole Frondizi. President Frondizi was welcomed by Fra’ Ernesto Paternò Castelli di Carcaci, who at the time held the position of Lieutenant of the Grand Master.

In 1990, the Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta, the now Venerable Fra’ Andrew Bertie, traveled to the Argentine Republic on an official visit and was received by the President of the Nation, Dr. Carlos Saúl Menem, as part of an extensive tour of Latin America, which also included Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil.

In 2003, Fra’ Andrew Bertie received an official visit from the President of the Republic of Argentina, Eduardo Duhalde. The president was accompanied by his wife, the Cultural Secretary Ambassador Esteban Caselli, and the Argentine Ambassador to the Order, Vicente Espeche Gil. The meeting took place at the Grand Magistry in Rome.

In 2004, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic visited the Sovereign Order of Malta, further strengthening bilateral relations between the two parties.

On 1st July 2021, Felipe Carlos Solá, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic, was received by the Grand Chancellor, Albrecht Boeselager. The meeting was attended by the Argentine Ambassador to the Sovereign Order of Malta, Maria Fernanda Silva, and the Order’s Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Stefano Ronca.

The following year, the Secretary for Worship of the Argentine Republic, Ambassador Guillermo Rodolfo Oliveri, was received at the Magistral Palace by Ambassador Stefano Ronca. The war in Ukraine, its economic consequences even across the Atlantic and in South America, as well as the importance of interreligious dialogue were some of the topics of the meeting.
